Bacteremia or pseudobacteremia? Review of pseudomonas fluorescens infections.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION P. fluorescens is an aerobic, Gram-negative bacillus related to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Like other species of Pseudomonas, the organism is widespread in nature and is found in water, moist soil, and vegetation. Due to its low virulence, P. fluorescens is an infrequent cause of infections except for catheter-related bloodstream infections in cancer patients. From August 1, 2003 to May 31, 2016, Hyogo Emergency Medical Center and the Kobe Red Cross Hospital treated three cases of bloodstream infection caused by P. fluorescens. Were these cases true bacteremia or pseudobacteremia? Would it be a risk to induce nosocomial infection, possibly leading to an infection outbreak? We retrospectively examined these three cases in detail.

Clinical significance of potential contaminants in blood cultures among patients in a medical center.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Blood culture is important for the diagnosis of sepsis, but it is sometimes difficult to differentiate true bacteremia from pseudobacteremia. This study proposed clinical criteria and evaluated the role of repeat blood cultures in assessing the clinical significance of potential contaminants in blood cultures (PCBCs). METHODS From February to May in 2004 (prospective st...

Background and purpose: Pseudomonas infections include urinary tract infections (UTIs), respiratory infections, soft tissue infections, dermatitis, bacteremia, gastrointestinal, bone and joint infections, and systemic types of infections, especially in hospitalized patients with severe burns, or patients with immunosuppression such as cancer or AIDS. Considering the importance of the virulence...
متن کاملOutbreak of Pseudomonas Oryzihabitans Pseudobacteremia Related to Contaminated Equipment in an Emergency Room of a Tertiary Hospital in Korea
Pseudomonas oryzihabitans is frequently found in various sites within hospital settings, including sink drains and respiratory therapy equipment. Although it rarely causes human infections, P. oryzihabitans has recently been considered a potential nosocomial pathogen, especially in immunocompromised hosts. We report our experience of an outbreak of P. oryzihabitans pseudobacteremia, presumably ...
متن کاملMultistate outbreak of Pseudomonas fluorescens bloodstream infection after exposure to contaminated heparinized saline flush prepared by a compounding pharmacy.
BACKGROUND Pharmaceutical compounding, the manipulation of ingredients to create a customized medication, is a widespread practice. In January 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was notified of 4 cases of Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteremia that were traced to contaminated heparinized saline intravenous flush syringes prepared as a compounded medical product. PATIENTS AND MET...
متن کاملPseudomonas pickettii as a cause of pseudobacteremia.
An outbreak of pseudobacteremia caused by Pseudomonas pickettii biovariant 1 is reported. The common source was the aqueous chlorhexidine solution prepared by the hospital pharmacy. The contamination problem caused by the antiseptic solution was eventually solved by a series of preventive measures.
